Fears and phobias are more common than most people realise — and more treatable than many people expect. Whether it’s a fear of flying that’s preventing you from travelling, a driving anxiety that’s limiting your independence, a dental phobia that’s affecting your health, or a deep-seated fear that feels completely irrational but utterly overwhelming, hypnotherapy can help.
You don’t have to just avoid the things that scare you. And you don’t have to feel embarrassed about them either.
A fear is a natural response to something genuinely threatening. A phobia is an intense, irrational fear of something that poses little or no real danger — but that feels every bit as real and overwhelming as if it did.
Phobias often develop after a specific triggering experience, though sometimes they appear to emerge without an obvious cause. Either way, the response they trigger — racing heart, panic, avoidance, overwhelming dread — is very real and can significantly impact quality of life.
Common fears and phobias I work with
I work with a wide range of fears and phobias in my Weston-super-Mare practice, including:
Flying — one of the most common phobias, and one that can severely limit travel, career opportunities and life experiences. Fear of flying often involves a combination of fear of heights, loss of control and catastrophic thinking.
Driving anxiety — whether it’s a fear of motorways, roundabouts, driving alone, or a general anxiety behind the wheel that developed after an accident or difficult experience.
Dental phobia — fear of the dentist affects a significant number of adults and often leads to avoided appointments and deteriorating dental health. Hypnotherapy can make dental visits feel genuinely manageable.
Medical and needle phobias — fear of blood tests, injections, medical procedures or hospitals can prevent people from getting the healthcare they need.
Public speaking — a fear of speaking in front of others, presenting, or being the centre of attention that holds people back professionally and socially.
Heights — affecting everything from stairwells and balconies to hiking, climbing or travelling.
Social phobia — an intense fear of social situations, judgement or embarrassment that goes beyond ordinary shyness and significantly limits daily life.
Specific phobias — spiders, dogs, vomiting, open spaces, enclosed spaces, and many others. If your fear isn’t listed here, please get in touch — I work with a wide range of specific phobias.
Phobias are maintained by the subconscious mind. Even when you know rationally that something isn’t dangerous, the subconscious keeps triggering the fear response because it has learned to associate that thing with threat.
This is why telling yourself to “just calm down” or “be rational” rarely works — you’re trying to use the conscious mind to override something that’s happening at a deeper level. Willpower alone isn’t enough.
Hypnotherapy works directly with the subconscious mind — which is exactly where phobias live. By accessing this level, it’s possible to update the learned associations that are driving the fear response and replace them with calmer, more proportionate responses.
As a hypnotherapist in Weston-super-Mare, I use a solution-focused approach that focuses on how you want to feel and function rather than dwelling on the fear itself. Sessions typically help with:
Reducing the fear response — calming the automatic physical and emotional reaction that the phobia triggers, so it no longer feels overwhelming.
Changing the subconscious association — working at the level where the phobia is actually maintained, to update the learned response.
Building confidence and control — developing a genuine sense that you can face the situation calmly and handle whatever arises.
Gradual desensitisation — using relaxation and visualisation techniques to help you approach the feared situation in a calm and controlled way.
Phobias often respond very well to hypnotherapy — sometimes more quickly than other issues. Simple specific phobias can sometimes show significant improvement in just a few sessions. More complex fears or those with deeper roots may take longer, but progress is usually noticeable relatively quickly.
